As we become more dependent on electronic gadgets, we are also learning that the workplace environment is changing. Rapidly. Productivity tends to suffer when people are holed up in what could be termed a “cubicle farm”. As such, working from home is becoming more acceptable and popular. Unused home spaces are being converted into offices. But home offices must be designed effectively so that work is efficient and productive. A home office remodel can create a better work environment that improves overall productivity.
On top of everything else, a home office remodel can be a significant tax deduction.
Lots of Natural Lighting
People get sick of corporate office settings because they’re often pretty grim. Fluorescent lighting is about as bad as you can get and does not promote health or feeling good. Your home office remodel, if you can swing it, should include adding windows in order to increase natural light that floods the space. If knocking out a wall or adding windows is too costly then consider moving your home office to a different room and remodeling that. Even a skylight could make all the difference to levels of energy and motivation. Anything but the old cubicle!
Tame the Chaos and Mayhem
One problem we face with having a home office is that it’s easy to slack off. There are many distractions and often these cause us to be poorly organized. Think hard about your space and how to organize it. A home office remodel should include installing built-in storage as well as multifunctional furniture options.
Drown Out the Noise
Getting distracted in your home office is a big way to crush productivity. Hearing the dog barking, a loud TV, or kids making a ruckus are all counterproductive. If noise is an issue then install sound absorbing materials during the home office remodel on both interior and exterior walls.
Make the Best of a Small Space
Not everyone can have a huge home office remodel. Some haven’t the space to “go big”. Others may be new to working from home, or going freelance, or have expanding families.
It’s not difficult to create an office that is tucked away. Remodel an old walk-in closet, section off part of the basement, or convert a murphy bed wall into a French door office. A closet can be an amazing home office. When you’re done with work, simply slide the door shut.
Make It Your Own
Working in a corporate office can be a soul-sucking experience. The walls are drab, the desks are boring, and the lighting makes you depressed. Corporate offices aren’t meant for you; they’re often whatever a company can get for cheap. This utilitarian approach to office design does little for productivity. Remodel your home office into something you enjoy, even if it doesn’t perfectly match the rest of your home. Your space, your rules. Change the floors, the paint, get whatever furniture you like, and decorate it all your way. If you’re happy in your environment, then your productivity increases.
Whatever your reasons for working from home, your home office should be a place that you enjoy. Even a dingy closet can be remodeled into a fabulous office space. You can undergo a home office remodel inexpensively if you make smart choices. However small or grand you decide to go, only you can determine what will make you a more productive worker.
