It’s that time of year again. Time to get out the holiday silver, the crystal, and the holiday linens. Soon your kitchen will be filled with the smell of pumpkin and clove, the sound of laughter, and the warmth of friends, family, and other visitors. Before the festivities begin, why not give your home the care and attention it deserves? Not only will it add to the holiday ambiance, it will be a gift to yourself and your family that will last for years. Our designer has a few design tips to re-decorate your home in preparation for the holidays. With just a few simple upgrades, you can transform your home into the epitome of luxury and beauty for years to come.
Here are five ways to make your home holiday perfect:
1. Add A Fireplace
This simple feature can change the entire look of a room, adding an irresistibly pleasant ambiance. Natural stone or reclaimed bricks add a rustic look; custom cabinetry and a stainless steel gas fireplace give a sleek, contemporary appearance. Try adding a large mirror above the mantel to make the room look more open, or place a screen around the firebox for safety and a more classic look. If you have a low-lying fireplace, you can paint the wall above the mantel the same color as the fireplace to give it more presence in the room. A popular look right now is a stone-clad wall from floor to ceiling with an elevated stainless steel gas fireplace installed at eye level. You can get as creative as you like with the fireplace cladding, even using glass and marble mosaic tiles in colors that match the motif of the room.
2. Open Up Your Kitchen
One of the most effective ways to add luxury to your home is through an open floor plan. It is surprisingly simple to remove a wall or two (as long as they are not load-bearing) or turn one into a knee wall, with a night-and-day difference in the apparent size of your home. Make sure you check with a licensed contractor and have him get any needed building permits before removing any walls in your home.
3. Have Fun With Colors
There truly is nothing like a fresh coat of paint to change the appearance of a room. Grays and whites are cool and calming; red or orange-based colors add cozy warmth. To make a small room feel larger, paint walls and trim the same color. For a lighter look in a room with few windows, go for natural hues like Sherwin Williams Alabaster or Benjamin Moore Coastal Fog. Have fun and be bold by painting an accent wall.
4. Replace That Old Carpet
There is nothing like new floors to give your home a complete makeover. Our designer does not recommend using carpet, as it is usually outdated and can be a problem for those with allergies. Most homeowners love the warmth of wood, and wood-grain tile is a very popular design item right now—it has the look of wood, with the durability of tile. For homeowners wanting good quality at a decent price, our designer recommends Mohawk wood-grain tile.
5. Give Yourself New Countertops
It’s amazing what a new set of countertops will do for your kitchen or even your bathroom. New marble can be a good option for those on a budget, but quartz is going to be your most durable and beautiful product if you are willing to invest in it. Unlike marble, quartz doesn’t stain, doesn’t break, and can withstand heavy chopping or heat without being affected. Another beautiful option is concrete countertops, which can be completely custom and are a tasteful, eco-friendly option. Concrete countertops are not for those on a budget, however, as these can sometimes be more expensive than quartz.
With just a few simple upgrades, you can have the home of your dreams for the holidays – leaving your guests in awe of your “new” space.
