Major Home Renovation for Homes That Need More Than Small Updates

Major Home Renovation for Homes That Need More Than Small Updates

Sometimes a home needs more than new paint, flooring, or cabinets. Sometimes the layout no longer works. Rooms feel disconnected. Storage is lacking. The kitchen sits closed off from the rest of the house. Or the structure itself needs updating.

Nelson Construction and Renovations supports homeowners across Clearwater, St. Petersburg, and the Tampa Bay area as they plan large-scale renovations involving multiple areas of the home. As a local contractor, we work with homeowners who want practical solutions that improve how the whole property functions. These projects often involve removing walls, changing room layouts, updating primary systems, and rebuilding portions of the interior.

When a Major Home Renovation Makes Sense

A major home renovation is often the right choice when the existing space is sufficient, but the layout no longer supports how the household lives.

You might consider a major renovation if:

  • The floor plan feels closed off or outdated
  • The kitchen is too isolated
  • Bedrooms and bathrooms are poorly positioned
  • Storage is limited
  • The home has aging plumbing or electrical systems
  • Structural walls limit functional improvements

Rather than moving, many homeowners choose to invest in a major home renovation to reshape the house they already own. In many cases, this type of home renovation makes more sense than trying to patch individual issues one room at a time. This keeps them in the same neighborhood while improving how the home functions day to day.

Working with Yokasta has been a great experience! She was the designer on a project where I helped the client select furniture for their new space, and she made the whole process incredibly smooth. Yokasta was attentive, communicative, and always made sure everything was going well and that the clients were happy with every choice. She was involved every step of the way, which made collaboration easy and enjoyable. I’d be happy to work with her again!

Now that our housing restoration was done using Nelson Construction, I wanted to leave a final review. I especially want to thank Jesus and Ruben, the on site managers, for going the extra mile to make sure everything was done correctly, like they would want it in their own houses. When the company was not going to fill the holes when polishing the terrazzo, they found a new company that did it. Chris, the treasurer, is helping us to sort out the current costs of what we paid so that we can resubmit it to our insurance adjuster. Ashley, in the office, is always available to help me find the right person to contact. All these hardworking people , Jesus, Ruben, Ashley, Matt, Chris, Chris, and Yocasta , are the reasons I would recommend Nelson Construction.

Nelson Construction and Chuck our superintendent were very thorough in getting us through our phases of repair/construction all the way to finish. Chuck is very dependable and I trusted him as my advocate in getting things done right all the time. The team behind him were supportive as well. As with most projects there are unknowns and things that come up that were not expected. Chuck and the team took care of all of those issues and made it easy for me. Good people at Nelson Construction and I would recommend them.

Structural Changes in a Major Home Renovation

Many major home renovation projects involve structural adjustments. That could mean removing load-bearing walls, adding support beams, adjusting ceiling framing, or modifying window and door openings.

Before any structural work begins, we review:

  • Existing framing
  • Load paths
  • Foundation condition
  • Roof structure
  • Utility locations

Structural work has to be done correctly the first time. When walls are removed or relocated, the home must remain stable and secure. That is why working with an experienced residential building contractor and licensed contractor matters on larger renovation projects.

Reworking the Layout for Better Flow

Older homes often have closed-off rooms that don’t connect well. Hallways may take up unnecessary space. Dining rooms may be separated from kitchens. Living areas may feel tight even if the total overall size is reasonable.

A major home renovation allows those layouts to be reworked. In many cases, the result feels closer to a full home remodel because the changes affect how the whole house looks, moves, and functions.

Walls can be repositioned. Rooms can be expanded or combined. Traffic patterns can be improved. Storage can be built into areas that were previously underused.

The goal is not simply to open everything up. It’s to create a layout that makes sense for how the home is actually used. For homeowners planning broader interior changes, this type of work often overlaps with a complete home renovation rather than a single isolated project.

Why Choose Nelson As Your Construction Contractors?

Our mission is to provide turn-key design build services that are completed on time and under budget, with every detail completed to perfection.

We strive to deliver services that are above and beyond what is requested, making the whole process simple and stress-free, the result being homeowners who are delighted with the comfort and beauty of their home for years to come.

Updating Primary Systems During Major Renovation

Large renovation projects often expose older systems hidden behind walls. Wiring may be outdated. Plumbing lines may need replacement. Insulation may be insufficient.

Instead of patching over these issues, a major home renovation gives homeowners the opportunity to address them properly. This is especially important in an old house renovation, where hidden conditions often affect the scope of work once demolition begins.

Common upgrades include:

  • Electrical panel replacement
  • Rewiring older circuits
  • Plumbing line updates
  • HVAC adjustments
  • Insulation improvements

Handling these upgrades while the walls are already open prevents future disruptions and strengthens the overall performance of the home.

Kitchens and Bathrooms Within Major Home Renovation Projects

Kitchens and bathrooms are frequently included in major home renovation plans. When structural walls are adjusted or floor plans are redesigned, these rooms are often rebuilt to match the new layout.

For example:

  • A kitchen may expand into an adjoining dining area
  • A bathroom may be relocated to improve bedroom access
  • A laundry room may be repositioned
  • Storage may be built into previously unused spaces

Rather than remodeling one room at a time, these changes are handled as part of a larger, coordinated renovation. Homeowners often benefit from working with experienced kitchen contractors and bathroom contractors when these spaces are being rebuilt as part of the wider plan.

Major Home Renovation Services in Clearwater and St. Petersburg

Nelson Construction and Renovations works with homeowners on major home renovation projects that require structural changes, layout improvements, and system upgrades. As an experienced remodeling contractor, we approach these projects with careful planning and realistic construction sequencing.

These projects demand careful planning and consistent execution. They are not small updates. They reshape how the home functions. Many homeowners prefer to work with one renovation company that can manage the process clearly from start to finish.

If your house no longer fits your needs but you want to stay in the same location, a major home renovation may provide a practical path forward.

Our team can review your existing layout and discuss how structural and interior changes can improve how your home works for you. As a full-service remodeling company, we help homeowners move from planning to construction with a clear process, and our design-build service supports better coordination when layout, structural, and finish decisions all need to come together.

How can we help you?

We’d love to hear about your next project. Please send us your name and callback number and we’ll call you as soon as possible to discuss your goals.
